Businesses honored for worksite wellness efforts

Nearly 60 businesses were honored as Healthiest Maryland Businesses Wellness at Work Awardees in June. The 58 companies were praised for accomplishments in worksite health promotion. “In public health, we strive to improve health through community-based efforts,” Dr. Howard Haft, deputy secretary of the Maryland Department of Health, said in announcing the winners. “Worksites are one place that many Marylanders spend a majority of their day and are a crucial setting in which to make the healthy choice the easy choice.” The awards are sponsored by Healthiest Maryland Businesses, the state’s initiative to support healthy workplaces. Jeweler reflects on 30 years in business

Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics to offer open house Saturday

Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics will host an open house at 11 a.m. Saturday at its Hagerstown campus, 14516 Pennsylvania Ave. The institute’s hands-on program in Hagerstown trains people in aviation maintenance and provides students with the opportunity to test for the FAA Airframe and Powerplant Certification. The 16-month Hagerstown program is Maryland’s only FFA-approved airframe and powerplant training program, according to a news release from the institute. PIA also offers a 21-month associate degree program, available at its Pittsburgh campus, and people can transfer from the Hagerstown program to the Pittsburgh campus if they choose to pursue that degree. Some Washington County roads could be deemed ‘critical’ freight corridors

Transportation planners are taking steps to make sure a few more miles of area roads can qualify for federal freight funds. The Hagerstown/Eastern Panhandle Metropolitan Planning Organization, or HEPMPO, this week provisionally recommended 5 miles of roads in Washington County be designed as a Critical Urban Freight Corridor. Teen clothier rue21 files for bankruptcy

CRANBERRY, Pa. — Teen clothing retailer rue21 is restructuring and filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy about a month after announcing it would close some 400 stores, including one at the Hagerstown Premium Outlets, to focus more on online sales. In a news release posted on its website, the retailer announced it has entered into agreements with some lenders to reduce its debt and provide additional capital to support its restructuring.
