BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. — War Memorial Hospital’s 16-bed long-term care unit received the highest rating in the Best Nursing Homes rankings released by U.S. News & World Report.
U.S. News evaluated more than 15,000 facilities nationwide. This year, 2,005 nursing homes earned the designation of a Best Nursing Home.
War Memorial’s unit was one of only four of the 126 nursing homes in West Virginia to receive an overall rating of five stars for performance in health inspections, nurse staffing and quality of medical care.
“We are very proud of this recognition for our exceptional team,” Tom Kluge, president of War Memorial Hospital, said in a news release. “They work hard to maintain a safe, vibrant, medically-supported home for those unable to live independently. They love what they do, and it shows.”
Shawna Athey, director of patient services, added, “Your family is our family, that’s how we look at it. We strive to give our best to ensure that every day is the best it can be for our residents.”
U.S. News has updated its methodology to ensure that the Best Nursing Home designation is given to facilities that demonstrate appropriate use of key services and consistent performance in national quality measures.
To qualify as a Best Nursing Home this year, facilities had to earn an average of 4.5 stars or better during the 12 months of federal reports ending in October 2017. They also had to consistently meet certain performance standards set by U.S. News during the period, such as earning at least four stars in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services overall rating for all 12 months.
“This is an honor for our team to be recognized again for the outstanding care they provide to our residents,” Heather Sigel, vice president of War Memorial, said in the news release. “We take great pride in our facility and in our commitment to excellence.”
