Wal-Mart plans late-summer opening for new store on Md. 65, other investments

Wal-Mart reports that its new store on Md. 65 south of Interstate 70 is one of several investments the company is making in Maryland this year. The new Washington County store — the only one Wal-Mart will open in the state this year — will create more than 300 jobs, according to a news release from the company. “The new Wal-Mart Supercenter, located south of Hagerstown off of Arnett Drive, is expected to open late August to mid-September of this year. Former Macy’s space sold at Valley Mall

The former Macy’s Department Store space at the Valley Mall in Halfway has been sold for $2.5 million, according to Washington County deed transfer records. According to a warranty deed on file with Washington County Circuit Court online records, Macy’s Retail Holdings Inc. sold the property to PR Valley Anchor-M LP. The address for PR Valley is the same as PREIT Services LLC of Philadelphia, the mall owner. The deed was transferred April 6. Real estate records indicate the department store was built in 1999 on 9.58 acres. Julie Rohm, mall general manager, said PRIET intends to lease the space. […]

African cuisine coming to Hagerstown

A new Hagerstown restaurant can trace its roots to a family venture in Texas and its influence to the cultures of Africa.

Dyllis Minang is planning to open Christopher’s on Friday at 204 E. Franklin St. It’s named for her brother, Christopher Bujung, who will be the chef. She said the restaurant will offer American and African cuisine, including items like plantains and pepper soup (with goat meat) and African takes on dishes like tilapia.

Photo This is owned by District Photo Inc. of Beltsville, Md., one of the largest direct-to-consumer customer product and photo fulfillment operators in the world with facilities in England and Australia.
