HAGERSTOWN, Md. — The Bowman Group’s newest hotel will provide 105 suite-style rooms in Washington County, Md., and tourism officials say the facility is a welcome addition.

Officials broke ground for the new Home2 Suites by Hilton in mid-June.

“We’re doing really well with tourism, a lot of visitors, a lot of money coming into the community, and I’m finding out we need more inventory,” Dan Spedden, president of the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said before the ceremony.

“We’ve been marketing the same 2,200 hotel rooms for years. It’s time that someone recognized the demand, and now we’re going to expand. It’s an exciting time to be involved in tourism.”

The $8.4 million, four-story extended stay hotel is being build at 1661 Pullman Lane, according to the building permit on file with Hagerstown city officials. It is slated to open May 1, 2019.

Don Bowman, president and chairman of the Bowman Group, thanked several people during brief remarks at the 30-minute ceremony, which was attended by several area business and politicians.

He reserved a special thanks for Bowman employees, saying “their good work” made it possible to expand and open a new hotel.

The new hotel will join the Homewood Suites by Hilton, the Holiday Inn Express and Suites and the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Event Center on what the Bowman Group calls its “hospitality campus” near Interstate 81.

“Oftentimes our hotels are filled to capacity,” Jeff Tedrick, Bowman Development’s president of construction operations, said at the groundbreaking.

Tedrick said that Brechbill & Helman Construction Co. Inc. of Chambersburg, Pa., was awarded the contract for the hotel. Newcomer Associates, also from Chambersburg, is the architectural firm, and Fox & Associates from Hagerstown is the engineering company.

Brechbill & Helman has built three other Home2 Suites, including one that recently opened in Frederick, he said. And Newcomer Associates designed the prototype.

He said Bowman Group was happy to have firms with that level of experience working on its project in Hagerstown.

According to the Home2 Suites by Hilton website, the hotels offer in-suite kitchens, are pet-friendly and provide other amenities, from free breakfasts to workout rooms and laundries.
