CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — According to the new owner of the business, the Gander Mountain outdoor store in Chambersburg is slated to remain open, despite notice that all 126 of the chain’s stores will close.
A notice posted on the Gander Mountain website said that, after 57 years, "all locations nationwide (are) going out of business." It also said there will be a "total liquidation."
But Marcus Lemonis, star of CNBC’s "The Profit" and chairman and chief executive officer of Camping World Holdings, acquired Gander Mountain’s assets, trademarks and leases — but not the inventory — in bankruptcy court.
He has been posting notices on his Twitter account that he plans to keep many of the stores open.
"A liquidator bought the inventory that’s in the stores and they have the right to sell that inventory down and out as if it’s going away," Lemonis told The Indianapolis Star. "But the confusing message is whether a store is staying open or not. And ultimately, we control the lease … every single property. And my intention is to keep at least 70 open."
In one of his Twitter posts, Lemonis said the liquidators have "exclusive use" of the Gander Mountain website until May 18.
On his Twitter account, Lemonis has been updating a list of the stores he plans to keep in operation, including the Chambersburg store.
Another store in Winchester, Va., is not on the list. There is a Camping Word store near the Gander Mountain facility in Winchester.
Camping World also acquired Gander Mountain’s Overton boating business.
Camping World said it "initially plans to operate stores that it believes have a clear path to profitability," according to a company news release.
"The current liquidation of the existing Gander Mountain inventory will allow us to start with a clean slate of what we consider the appropriate mix and level of inventory, including the addition of Camping World and Overton’s offerings where appropriate," Lemonis said in the release.
Camping World offers products, services, protection plans and resources for recreational-vehicle enthusiasts.
